Malaria

Personally I favour passive prevention, and I do not take malaria drugs in Kenya or
Tanzania because all the reserves are on a plateau at an altitude of 1200m to
3000m, but note that with passive prevention, you must apply it properly,
otherwise things could become serious. See below.

Never take any medication from anyone, except from your own GP. He/she is the
only person who will know which medication to give you. Some drugs do more
harm than good!

Remember that what's good for your neighbour is not necessarily good for you too!
And vice-versa, always remember that!

There are very few flies and mosquitoes on the plateaus in Kenya and Tanzania
(northern part), so I take the following precautions:

These rules apply from 5.30pm to 8.00am, as this is when
mosquitoes become virulent!

Outside of these hours, ensure you wear a T-shirt and shorts.

Rules for passive prevention: 5.30pm to 8.00am

- I wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers
- I spray the tent or bedroom with a "RAID" type spray that kills everything
- I spray a "clothing" repellent on material and clothing - at the pharmacy, ask
for tropical mosquitoes!
- I spray my hands and visible skin with a "skin" repellent.
Ask your pharmacist for a product for tropical mosquitoes.

In coastal regions, where the risk is higher due to the humidity and the heat, it is in
your best interest to follow this passive prevention, but also follow your
doctor's instructions - he/she will tell you whether or not you should be taking
anti-malarial drugs!

Vecteur du Paludisme
This is the mosquito that carries malaria
(a mosquito that stings does not transmit the disease if it is not contaminated)
Female mosquitoes only sting after nightfall until around 8.00am.

--------------------

Also beware of the tsetse fly which stings during the day - it hurts!
Wear light-coloured clothing (avoid blue as this attracts them), impregnate your
clothing with insecticides (synthetic pyrethrin) and regularly cover exposed skin with
insect repellent.

Vaccination against yellow fever is strongly recommended (often compulsory, valid
for 10 years, take certificate on your trip) and anti-malaria treatment is
recommended. Check with your GP, as there may be contra-indications! I also
recommend vaccinations against hepatitis A (and even B) and tetanus.

Also pack sun cream (SPF30 - the sun is 8 times stronger than in Europe) and to
reduce possible burns, a burns cream (do not joke with African sun) to apply in
thick layers without rubbing in!

Remember that your knowledge of treatment for a "great traveller" will always
be adapted for him/her and never for you. Do not take pointless risks. Your
GP is the only person authorised to advise you because he/she knows you.
